After 37 years in prison, longer than any other women in the state of California, Susan Atkins is asking for early release.

Atkins’ initial request for release consideration was made last month after a doctor determined that she had less than six months to live, prison officials said. But Cooley said “there is no reason to believe that inmate Atkins cannot receive appropriate, dignified and compassionate medical care within the state prison system.”
A state board will take up the issue Tuesday, with officials saying it’s cost more than $1.2 million to provide medical care and security for Atkins after her diagnosis with brain cancer in March

Atkins’ request has already been approved by the prison she is institutionalized in, California Institution for Women in Corona.
